Half Brother to Glencove Marina tops NH Breeze Up Sales

A half brother to the Grade 1 winning Glencove Marina topped the evening proceedings at Kempton Racecourse when selling to Gerry Hogan for £70,000. The three year old son of Kalanisi was consigned by Kennycourt Stud and performed extremely well in the mornings work session which led to some spirited bidding from many different parties, but it was Aiden Murphy who made the biggest play for the gelding before the hammer came down in favour of Hogan. The agent was seated with Hampshire based trainer Emma Lavelle who will take charge of the new recruit for owners Nick Mustoe and Tim Syder, who were also enjoying supper in the Kempton Clubhouse. Gerry Hogan also bought an Old Vic gelding from Kennycourt Stud for £36,000 who will be trained by Emma Lavelle and will race in the sole colours of Tim Syder. The four year old hailed from the same family as the top Lot and will be an exciting prospect for his new connections.

Barry Connell has had huge success at the DBS NH Breeze-Up Sales thanks to the likes of Frascati Park, whom he rode to victory in two Bumpers before he made a successful switch to Hurdles and he acquired a number of choice Lots through agent Gerry Hogan including a son of Rainbow High who was offered by Trickledown Stud. The good looking three year old breezed extremely well on the Kempton Polytrack and was another to attract plenty of interest and again it was Aiden Murphy who played the role as underbiddder when acting on behalf of Kim Bailey. Connell was seated throughout the evening with trainers John Hanlon and Carl Llewellyn and his spending also included a four year old son of Dushyantor who he bought through Gerry Hogan for £21,000. He was consigned by Harefiled Lodge Stables and was out of a half sister to the Grade 1 winning Bradbury Star.

Jonjo O'Neill was another trainer who was active during the night and his spending was topped by a son of King's Theatre who realised £41,000. Consigned by Roefield Stables, the three year old shares his sire with the ill fated Grade 1 winner Wichita Lineman and will join the Jackdaws Castle base to race for an existing owner.

Anthony Bromley from Highflyer Bloodstock was seated with trainers Paul Nicholls and Alan King throughout the evening and his spending included a half brother to Omnega who was bought for £25,000. The four year old son of Subotica was offered by Haras De Faydea who also sold a three year old son of Daliapour to Bromley for £20,000, whilst Kilminfoyle House Stud offered a son of Milan out of a half sister to the Grade 1 winning Risk Accessor who was knocked down to Highflyer Bloodstock for £25,000.

The sale was blighted by the unfortunate loss of some of the more exciting Lots on paper but this did not stop the median rising by 7.2% to £22,000 whilst the average fell to £27,071 and the aggregate was £568,500.

Following the conclusion of the sale, DBS Managing Director Henry Beeby said:

'There was little doubt that this was an extremely selective sale but, as ever, there was plenty of spirited bidding for the more popular lots. However, a clearance rate of just 40% would have to be disappointing ,especially when you consider the top class facilities on offer at Kempton. We will speak to vendors and see how other sales perform before we consider the future of the DBS NH Breeze-Up Sales which has, in the past, been an outstanding source of top class racehorses and the only sale of its kind to have sold subsequent Grade 1 winners'
